If you’re planning to head somewhere different but still comfortably close to home, try Surin Province, situated at the northeastern part of Thailand. Known for its scenic views, plethora of museums and historical ruins, here is also a great  place to shop for fine silk, silver beads and other ornaments. During the third week of November, look out for the annual Surin Elephant Round-up, where you’ll be enthralled by the agility and intelligence of the elephants as they play games such as Tug of War with men, and mind-boggling elephant football matches.

Take Singapore Airlines from Singapore or Jetstar Airways from Malaysia to Bangkok. The northeastern bus terminal in Bangkok caters daily bus services to Surin Province. Alternatively, take the trains departing from  Bangkok’s Hualamphong and Bang Sue stations to Surin.
