During our packed seven day trip to North Korea in early august, 2009, we visited the Mansudae Grand Monument, a towering 20-metre high statue of Kim Il Sung-also known as the father of communist North Korea. Erected in 1972 and a must-see site slotted into almost all itineraries, the statue is positioned high atop Mansu Hill and overlooks the city of Pyongyang. Standing from one end, this is one of the two gigantic bronze sculptures that flank Mr Kim Il Sung’s bronze monument, where a signage reads: “The Newly Freed Proletariat Thank to the Great Leader Kim Il Sung”, showing various military and civilian figures posing heroically.
