HANMER SPRINGS

Executive summary by darmansjah

As folks in the northern hemisphere start anticipating summer and the warmth it promises, people down in the southern hemisphere start bundling up for the cold. Embrace the cool and head to Hanmer Springs, one of NewZealand’s premier alpine spa destinations. The town is built around a popular hot spring, which was discovered in the late 19th century. Many flock here to indulge in a pampering session soaking in the thermal waters of the hot pools. If sitting still is not your forte, there are two skiing areas around the region – the Hanmer Springs ski field and the Mount Lyford ski field – where you can have a go carving up the snow slopes.

From Singapore, fly into Christchurch International Airport with Singapore Airlines. Hanmer Springs is a short 90 minutes drive away.

Originally built in 1932, Heritage Hanmer Springs has been beautifully restored to its original Spanish design, boasting 54 well-appointed rooms, eleven villas, lush gardens and amazing mountain views (from US$120; heritagehotels.co.nz/hanmer-springs).
