TENGGOL ISLAND

executive summary by darmansjah

From March to October, the deep waters of the Terengganu Marine Park come to life, offering a perfect window into untouched coral gardens and rare species of marine life. Situated off the Terengganu coast and tucked in between its more famous sisters Redang and Tioman islands, Tenggol is one of Malaysia’s most beautiful and serene islands. The island possesses rugged cliffs, which offer a spectacular diving canvas and an ideal hideaway for  the tropical underwater world.  Over 20 stunning dive sites surround the island, with depths of up to 30 metres, and guaranteed sightings of some of the world’s most spectacular marine life – parrot fishes, sea turtle, eagle rays, black-tipped reef sharks, barracudas and more.

From Singapore, fly into Kuantan’s Sultan Ahmad Shah Airport with Firefly (fireflyz.com.my). From Kuala Lumpur, fly into Terengganu’s sultan Mahmud airport. The quaint fishing town of Kuala Dungun, Terengganu, from where you can arrange boat transfers to the island, is a three-hour drive from Sultan Mahmud Airport.

The 99-room Tanjong Jara Resort is an atmospheric sanctuary steeped in age-old Malay traditions, and also has a Water Sports Centre with experienced dive instructors. The resort has a Tengol Diver’s Escape package that includes two days of diving excursions (from US$330; tanjongjararesort.com).
