Short List

Which are the largest internationally unrecognized states by population?

executive summary by darmansjah

There is – officially at least – no such country as Taiwan. Instead, the Republic of China (capital Taipei) is recognized by 23 countries, while the rest recognize the People’s Republice of China (capital Beijing). Nevertheless, Taiwan has healthy unofficial relations with many more states, even if it has no UN seat. The State of Palestine is recognized by more than 100 countries, but its government only has observer status at the UN. Only Turkey recognizes Northern Cyprus, while Transnistria, Nagorno-Karabakh and Somaliland are not officially recognised by any UN member.

Republic of china, (Taiwan) 23 million

State of Palestine 4,4 thousand

Somaliland 3,5 million

Transnistria 530 thousand

Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic 507 thousand

Northern Cyprus 250 thousand

Nagorno-Karabakh 150 thousand

South Ossetia 70 thousand
